Our Mission:
The Event's mission is to bring the community and local businesses together with the goal of raising money and awareness for a local non-profit organization.
This year the proceeds will go to the Chemung County Habitat for Humanity, a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
How did we come to be?
Early in 2007 myself and Anne, (my wife) would sit around the food counter with the owner (Todd McClelland) of the Classic Café and shoot the breeze about having some sort of food competition the in the Elmira-Corning community could involve themselves in.
This idea would be something that would involve young people as well as our entire community. My original thought I was tossing around was the idea of an “Iron Chef” type competition. Until one day in February of 2008 we walked into the Classic Café and sat down for dinner, when Todd sat down next to us and said, “how about we do a gingerbread house competition”. The moment those words rolled off his tongue, we were sold on the idea. The logistics of this type of competition were far easier than that of an Iron Chef Competition.
Our next step was to put a plan together that we could sell to businesses for sponsorships. Our first year in 2008 was well worth the work! 33 gingerbread houses were built by 83 entrants.
The event, originally called the Gingerbread House Competition of the Twin Tiers was quickly changed to the Gingerbread House Competition of New York State shortly after our first event. We have high hopes of bringing more people from around the whole Northeast to our area, to support our chosen organization and to help increase tourism in our area.
